The vote-buying part makes a lot more sense once you know Australia’s role in this. Back then, if somebody paid for your vote, they could actually watch and make sure you voted the way they wanted. Australia helped change that in the 1850s with a government-printed ballot that you filled out in private. That became the Australian ballot, and eventually the United States adopted it too. Credit where credit is due. Australia ate with that one. #votingrights #australia #americanhistory #historytok
